Newjersey Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megans Law makes it mandatory for all states put a method in place for informing local residents when a sexual offender is relocated into their neighborhood.
Megan was merely seven years old when a prior sex offender that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, rapped, and murdered her. It was determined that if her family or other community members had known that a repeated sexual predator was living amongst them, this crime could've been thwarted. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law was passed, Newjersey has strived to protect its offering the most current information relating to past sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The law has confirmed that while sexual assaults are still a problem in the United States, crimes committed by past offenders are on a downturn.
